India Braces for 25 Percent U.S. Tariffs
On Truth Social, Trump accused India of unfair trade tactics and extensive energy and arms dealings with Russia, posting: "INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST."
While details about the “penalty” remain undisclosed, Trump blasted India’s trade restrictions and its close economic ties with Russia. He said, “India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World.”
He labeled India’s trade barriers as “the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” underscoring America’s trade deficit with the South Asian powerhouse.
Trump also pointed out India’s reliance on Russia for military hardware and energy, stating, “They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE.”
In a follow-up post, Trump reaffirmed that the August 1 deadline for reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries is firm. “THE AUGUST FIRST DEADLINE IS THE AUGUST FIRST DEADLINE ... IT STANDS STRONG, AND WILL NOT BE EXTENDED,” he emphasized.
He concluded by calling the date “A BIG DAY FOR AMERICA.”
