Zelenskyy Seeks to Strengthen Defense Ties with Japan

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope on Friday for expanded defense cooperation with Japan, including an early meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

In an interview with Japan’s Kyodo News published in Kyiv, Zelenskyy emphasized that air defense is “crucial” for Ukraine and said it would be “very helpful” if the Japanese prime minister agreed to open dialogue on the topic.

“Madame prime minister -- she's very welcome … We can think about it as quick as possible,” Zelenskyy said when asked about a potential meeting with Takaichi. He added that he is ready to meet her "in any format," whether on the sidelines of major multilateral gatherings or during a visit to Japan.

Highlighting the significance of working with countries licensed to produce air defense systems, Zelenskyy cited Japan as “one of these countries.” He stressed that these systems are intended solely for defense against Russian missile and drone attacks, not for offensive purposes.

Zelenskyy also offered to share Ukraine’s sea drone technology with Japan, noting that it has proven effective in preventing Russian vessels from operating near Ukrainian shores.

On US social media company X, Zelenskyy described potential defense cooperation between Ukraine and Japan as “historic” and welcomed Takaichi to visit Ukraine, calling the collaboration “very important for our two countries.”
