Russia Warns of Possible Strikes in Kyiv, Urges Diplomatic Evacuations

(MENAFN) Russia called on foreign countries Wednesday to evacuate their diplomatic staff and other personnel from Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, warning of potential “retaliatory strikes” if Ukraine carries out attacks during upcoming Victory Day commemorations on May 9.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a statement that Moscow had sent a note to all foreign diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Russia.

The message referenced a recent statement by the Russian Defense Ministry, which in turn cited comments made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier this week.

According to Zakharova, the note urged foreign governments and organizations to treat the warning with “utmost responsibility” and to ensure the “timely evacuation” of diplomatic staff and citizens from Kyiv.

It also warned of what it called the “inevitability of a retaliatory strike” against Kyiv, including so-called “decision-making centers,” if Ukraine launches attacks during Victory Day events scheduled for May 9, according to reports.
