National court groups seek lawyers’ views on law school accreditation

Conference of Chief Justices sealThe Conference of Chief Justices and Conference of State Court Administrators are seeking lawyers’ perspectives on law school accreditation as jurisdictions across the country reexamine the role and impact of accreditation standards.

The groups’ Committee on Legal Education and Admissions Reform (CLEAR) is gathering input for a report and recommendations expected in early 2027. The effort is examining minimum standards for law schools, including institutional governance, operational resources, curricular quality, and graduate outcomes.

Most jurisdictions require applicants for admission to the bar to graduate from an accredited law school. CLEAR also is examining issues involving the portability of law licenses and the priorities that should guide minimum standards for legal education.

Lawyers do not need extensive knowledge of law school accreditation to participate in the survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete. Individual responses will not be reported, according to the conferences.

Lawyers may participate in the CLEAR accreditation survey
