National Leaders Barnstorm Nevada in Final Stretch of Critical Midterms

“Nevada is the microcosm of our country. It is the perfect proving ground for anyone who wants to be successful nationwide.” – Senator Cortez Masto

Nevada is a critical battleground state home to the closest gubernatorial contest in the nation and national leaders are barnstorming the state in the final stretch of the midterm election.

With the most working class voters of any battleground state and one of the most diverse electorates — Latinos, AAPI, Black, white working-class, and union voters — Nevada will be the first true test in the nominating process and anyone considering running for president should be looking at the Silver State’s midterm races as a playbook to winning back the coalition Democrats need nationally to take back the White House in 2028.

As the only state with multiple congressional districts where all are considered in play and the most flippable governor’s race in the country, Nevada is ground zero for lessons national Democrats can carry into the presidential election.

Politico: Why blue-collar voters could swing the Silver State back blue

Key points:

  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto says Democrats searching for answers about how to win again should look no further than her home state of Nevada.
  • Democrats are angling to oust GOP Gov. Joe Lombardo, hold three swing House seats and flip a fourth, a deep-red district President Donald Trump won by double digits in 2024 that suddenly looks competitive.
  • The moderate lawmaker argues the state’s diverse demographics — it’s working-class, union-driven and majority-minority, with Latinos accounting for roughly one in every five registered voters — make it a key testing ground for Democrats who struggled across those groups in 2024. And it will show whether the party has made any progress rebuilding that coalition ahead of 2028, when the state will vote second in the Democratic primary and likely be a presidential battleground.
  • “Nevada is the microcosm of our country,” Cortez Masto told POLITICO. “It is the perfect proving ground for anyone who wants to be successful nationwide.”
  • The party’s potential White House hopefuls are taking note as they descend on the state.
  • “It is important for them to understand the uniqueness and the issues of the West,” she said.

Washington Sun: Nevada Democrats Are Suddenly 2028 Kingmakers

Key points:

  • “There’s been so many people that come through here, and they have been since the end of the last election,” said Daniele Monroe-Moreno, the chair of Nevada’s Democratic Party who is also running for mayor of Las Vegas. “We’re just a pretty popular place.”
  • At least to her, the national Democrats flying into her state haven’t let on about their 2028 ambitions quite yet.
  • “I’m like, ‘So tell me. You can just tell me. I won’t tell anyone. Are you going to run for president?’” she told The Washington Sun in a phone interview. “And no one’s announcing publicly or privately yet, but what they are saying is that they know how important this 2026 election is leading into 2028.”
  • Nevada will be the second state to vote for a Democratic presidential nominee in 2028, making it a magnet now for Democrats exploring a White House bid. They’ve hit the trail with candidates up and down the state’s 2026 ballot, including several appearances with Aaron Ford, the Nevada attorney general who is running for governor against incumbent Joe Lombardo.
  • In the coming weeks, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Rahm Emanuel, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and California Rep. Ro Khanna are all expected to swing through the state. Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock, Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin all traveled to Nevada last week. Slotkin’s schedule included events with the Democratic Party and labor leaders. Warnock and Buttigieg joined Ford for events in Las Vegas. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has paid Ford a visit, and Kamala Harris hosted a fundraiser for him in California.
  • Potential 2028 candidates have collectively donated more than $1 million to boost Ford and other Nevada Democrats, Politico reported.
  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Nevada’s senior Democratic senator and chair of the ModSquad PAC, which supports moderate Democrats, has organized trips for Senate colleagues and other contenders. She collaborated with the state party and other organizations to invite Kelly, Slotkin, Warnock, Pritzker, Emanuel and Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego to Nevada in the past year, a spokesperson said. She also spoke with Govs. Wes Moore of Maryland and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania about how Democrats can appeal to working-class voters.
  • “Nevada is a microcosm of our country. I want candidates in Nevada early and often because I know that if you can win in Nevada, you can win anywhere,” Cortez Masto said in a statement.
