Lapid Rules Out Netanyahu-Led Unity Government After US Election Results
In a statement posted on X, Lapid connected the American election results to Israel’s domestic political landscape, arguing that they had produced an unexpected consequence for Netanyahu's chances of leading a unity administration.
“The American election results this morning have an unexpected outcome: they eliminate any possibility of a unity government led by Netanyahu,” Lapid wrote.
He further cautioned against Netanyahu continuing as prime minister, arguing that his remaining in office would threaten Israel’s security and democratic institutions while weakening its standing internationally.
“Israel cannot afford to let him remain prime minister,” Lapid said.
Lapid’s comments followed the Democrats’ victory in both chambers of the US Congress, a result that dealt a setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
Trump has supported Netanyahu, whose political future has remained a subject of debate amid discussions over the formation of Israel’s next government.
In the latest parliamentary distribution, Netanyahu’s bloc holds 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while Jewish opposition parties have 48 seats and Arab parties hold the remaining 19.
